Why the Crab has no Head

A very long time ago, before man came along to upset the natural balance, all animals lived together peacefully. But in those days, none of the animals had heads of their own, except the elephant, who was the King of the animals. He had a large collection of heads in all shapes and sizes, which he kept stored in a large cave. Every time an animal wished to leave the village compound to go out into the field or the bush, he would go to the elephant first and ask to borrow ahead. On his return to the animal village, the head would be returned to the king’s store. This worked very well for a time. The only problem was that there were not quite enough heads for all the animals. There always seemed to be one short, so at least one of the animals always had to stay behind in the village…

Why the Bat Flies at Night

Once upon a time, in the distant past, there was a great war between the animals who live in the sky and those that live on the ground. Nobody now remembers how the war started or what it was about, but it was a terrible time. Many animals on both sides were wounded or killed, and eventually, somebody said that if they carried on like this, there would be no animals left on the earth. So some of the sky animals and some of the ground animals had a meeting, and as nobody could recall what they were fighting each other for, it was agreed that a truce should be called, and peace declared…

The Woodsman And The Crane

A crane was standing in a stream, hoping to catch some fish. A huntsman was crawling through the bushes on the riverbank and spotted the crane. He’d not caught anything that day and carefully readied his bow and arrow. He took aim and sent an arrow flying towards the crane. The crane heard the movement of the arrow through the air and raised her wings. Just as she was airborne, the arrow hit her in the thigh. She squealed but was able to stay in the air and fly away. She didn’t get very far before the pain forced her down. She landed awkwardly in a clearing in the woods. A woodsman who’d been working there, gathering branches, found the poor Crane. He took pity on her, and dropped his wood, and carried the crane to his hut. There he removed the arrow and applied some herbs to help heal the wound. The woodsman took good care of the crane, he fed her and changed her dressing every day. As her wound healed, the crane fell in love with this kind woodsman…

The woman who flew to the moon

In a very distant past, much longer ago than anybody can possibly remember, ten suns lived in the sky. This meant it was always daylight, and the surface of the earth was scorching hot. It was truly a very uncomfortable place to live, and the people who lived here at that time must have been exceedingly miserable.

Some gods were quite happy to accept this situation because their homes were high up in the sky, and the excessive heat down on the earth didn’t bother them too much. Some other gods, however, saw all the problems these ten suns caused for the people down below and started feeling rather sorry for them. They put their old wise heads together and tried to think of a solution, but they discovered they were not very good at finding solutions, so in the end, they decided to offer a reward to anybody who could solve the problem of the ten suns…

The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats

Once upon a time, there lived an old mother goat in a pretty little cottage on the edge of the forest. She had seven little billy goats, and she loved them all dearly. On occasion, she would have to leave the cottage to get food for herself and her kids, and today was one of those occasions. She called all her kids together to give them a little lecture on safety. “Listen carefully, my dear children”, she began. “I need to go out to get some food, and I want you all to be very careful because I heard there is a wolf about. If he comes here and sees you out and about he will surely gobble you all up, all of you, your skin, your ears, your teeth, your guts, everything. He is a very crafty wolf, and he may well try to deceive you by disguising himself, so stay inside the house, and don’t open the door to anybody!”

“Don’t worry, mother, the little goats replied, “we will be really, really, careful, and do everything you say. We won’t let anybody in, don’t you worry about us!” And so she shooed her seven little billy goats into the cottage and made sure they locked the front door before she went on her way, into the forest.
